What To Expect During An Initial Consultation With A Therapist

therapy initial consult

Hurray! You did it. You reached out and scheduled the initial consultation. That is no small feat, and we recognize the emotional work it took to get to this place. Now you may be wondering, “What should I expect for the initial consultation phone call?” In this article, we will explore what to expect during that initial phone call.

At Rooted Acorn Counseling we value your unique needs and want to make sure that we are a good fit. That is why we offer a free initial consultation phone call service to make sure you find what is right for you. During the initial consultation, you can expect us to ask: “What challenge(s) in your life do you need help with?” This is a great opportunity to share about past therapy experiences and/or what you hope to gain from therapy this time around. Keep in mind this is a "get to know you" conversation. It is a time for you to get a feel for what it is like to talk with us and for us to make sure we can provide appropriate support for you.

The second half of the phone conversation will be a time for us to share about our clinical experience and style of therapy we provide. Feel free to ask us questions! We are happy to share more about our professional experience and philosophy.

Lastly, if you decide to take the next step by scheduling your first therapy appointment, and we determine we are able to meet your needs, we will talk about the logistics of starting therapy (e.g. telehealth, fees, initial paperwork process, etc).

If it is decided during the phone call or video meeting that we are not a good fit for your needs, we are happy to provide you with contact information for therapists or agencies who might be a good fit.

You can expect these calls or video meetings to last between 20 and 30 minutes.

Again, feel free to ask questions. We are here to help you prepare for this journey and want you to have the information you need.

Also, check out our article about how to prepare for your first therapy appointment.

We look forward to talking with you!
