HOW TO COPE WITH GRIEF: An Invitation
Here we are in 2021 with the hope of a cure to this deadly, global virus. This pandemic has affected communities and individuals differently, but one thing has affected us all:
Loss.
None of us has escaped it.
As things start to reopen and we pick up the pieces to rebuild, we will each have our journey, individually and collectively, through grief.
“Grief,” I like to say, “is like a strange and sneaky creature.” It sneaks up on us when we least expect it, in ways we often find perplexing. It finds its way into our every day lives and can have devastating effects on our relationships, our health, our work, our faith, and our world.
Perhaps, the strangest part about grief is that this incredibly painful experience is completely normal. It is a normal human experience to grieve. It is completely normal when grieving to experience intense anger one moment and the next moment feel like you’re falling to pieces and want to cry.
In this series, I (Lindsay) wanted to explore some common experiences with grief. These thoughts in this series are influenced by my clinical counseling training, my 7 years experience as a therapist, as well as my own experiences in grief that feel true to me. Remember, we are all different. Your journey will look differently than mine or anyone else's, and that is OK.
I invite you to explore grief with me in this blog series, and I would love to hear from you. What is one thing that has helped you journey through grief this year? Also, what questions do you have about grief? Let me know in the comments below.
Author: Lindsay Cade, LPC [she/her/hers] is a licensed mental health therapist with 7 years experience providing mental health services.
