How to Deal with Pet Behavioral Issues Causing Stress in Your Relationship

Managing behavioral issues with pets can be a daunting task, especially when it creates stress and conflict in our human relationships. In these situations, miscommunication between partners can happen easily, leading to anxiety and even anger in both the humans and the pets. Many partners get lost in the blame game of trying to find the culprit for their pet’s behaviors. However, it's important to acknowledge the complexity of the situation and hold empathy for ourselves, our pets, and our partners. By working together as a team, partners can navigate the challenges of aggression and other unwanted behaviors with our furry family members and learn to address and attend to the needs of the whole family. It takes patience, understanding, and a willingness to listen and communicate effectively, and sometimes we get stuck because it’s hard work! However, you don’t have to figure it out on your own. Working with a pet behavioral consultant and relationship therapist can help! That’s why we teamed up with Sami of Wise Whiskers Training to learn more about how pet behavioral consulting can help relieve stress in your relationship.

What is pet behavioral consulting?

Pet behavior consulting goes beyond standard training by addressing challenging behaviors such as aggression, anxiety, house soiling, resource guarding, and other maladaptive actions. Unlike training, which often focuses on teaching obedience or skills, behavior consulting aims to uncover the underlying causes of these difficult behaviors, ensuring that an animal’s needs are met and guiding them toward safer, happier interactions with their environment. This work is essential in helping pet owners understand their pets better, leading to lasting positive changes.

Meet Sami, Wise Whiskers Pet Behavioral Consultant.

Sami also holds a bachelor’s degree in Gender Studies, which gives them a unique lens to explore how cultural norms and oppressive structures affect both people and their pets. Sami is passionate about educating other animal professionals on gender and sexuality inclusive practices.

What is couples counseling?

Couples therapy is counseling focused on resolving relationship stress and interpersonal conflict. Couples therapy is also called relationship therapy, partners counseling, and marriage counseling. We use these terms interchangeably to acknowledge the diverse ways in which we relate and identify within relationships. In our work with folks identifying as LGBTQ+, we also explore and acknowledge how outside influences from society impact the relationship and/or inform roles and expectations.

6 Issues Pet Behavioral Consulting Addresses

1. Growling at people or other animals

This is commonly referred to as “reactivity.” Behavioral reactivity has many causes and together we get to the bottom of what is causing your pet’s reactivity in order to make changes to decrease or eliminate those behaviors.

2. Fearful behavior

Fearful behaviors can include, but are not limited to, hiding, shaking, trembling, or running away.

3. Separation anxiety

This is when your pet struggles when they’re left alone and may include behaviors like excessive barking, destructive chewing while you are away, pacing or eliminating in the house.

4. Inappropriate elimination

We’ve all had a “whoopsie” before, but when your pet is consistently eliminating in the house or outside of the litterbox, this is an issue.

5. Inter-pet conflict

If your pets are growling, chasing or biting on another, or one seems to be hiding more than they used to - this may be a sign that their relationship isn’t as healthy as it could be.

6. Excessive behaviors

Too much of a good thing is too much! Pet behavioral consulting can help with excessive jumping, chewing, or other body-focused behaviors like licking and biting themself.

FAQs about Pet Behavioral Consulting and Couples Counseling

  • Absolutely not! Anxiety in pets, just like in people, is a complex issue that arises from multiple factors, including genetics, past experiences, and environmental conditions. While certain adjustments can help address anxiety, it’s important to remember that you are doing your best with the knowledge you have. Behavior consulting is about finding solutions, not assigning blame.

  • Dogs bite for a range of reasons, including fear, pain, anxiety, frustration, or protective instincts over resources like food or toys. Though it can seem sudden, there’s always an underlying cause. “Trigger stacking,” a term used by animal trainers, refers to the accumulation of stressors that can lead to a bite. A behavior consultant like Sami can help assess your dog’s specific triggers and develop a plan to reduce the likelihood of biting in the future.

  • Working with a pet behavior consultant offers a tailored, holistic approach that addresses your pet’s unique needs, unlike the one-size-fits-all strategies often found in online resources. Consultants like Sami not only assess your pet’s behavior but also provide personalized strategies for preventing and resolving complex issues like aggression or anxiety. You’ll leave with a deeper understanding of your pet’s behavior and a more fulfilling, harmonious relationship.

  • It can be incredibly frustrating when you feel like your partner just isn't listening to you. Conflict and communication issues can arise in any relationship, no matter how strong. Rather than letting it fester, seeking out couples therapy could be the solution you need. A therapist can guide you and your partner through exercises and discussions that will help you learn to really hear one another and respond with empathy. So if you're struggling with feeling heard in your relationship, know that there are options out there to help.

When one partner isn’t on board with a behavior plan, it can be frustrating. Sami emphasizes that behavior consulting works best when all members of the household participate in sessions. This ensures everyone hears the same information, reducing the chance of one person feeling like the “bad guy” when relaying instructions. Much of behavior consulting revolves around environmental management and understanding how interactions with the pet can either help or hinder progress. Rather than blaming your partner, it’s important to approach this as a learning experience where both of you can grow in understanding and support the animal’s needs together.

  • Having a pet can bring immense joy into one's life, but navigating their behavior can be a source of conflict and communication issues within a relationship. Constant fighting about your pet's behavior can lead to anger and resentment between couples. A viable solution to this is couples therapy. Couples therapy can help you and your partner to identify the root of the conflict and teach you how to communicate with each other more effectively. A relationship therapist can also provide insights and advice that can help you come to a mutually agreeable solution about what to do with your pet's behavior. In the end, couples therapy can help you repair your relationship and improve the quality of life for you, your partner, and your pet.

In relationship therapy we work to understand each person’s needs to build clarity and practice communicating those needs. Dedicated time to communicate those needs outside of the stressful moments with your pet.

  • In relationships, it is common for couples to spiral into a relentless cycle of blame and shame, a cycle where arguments become both a habit and a source of despair. When conflicts arise, the feeling of hopelessness can settle in like an unwelcome guest, causing partners to position themselves as adversaries rather than allies. Within the safe space of relationship therapy, couples discover that each accusation is often a plea for understanding and connection. Learning to navigate this intricate dance, they can transform struggles into opportunities for connection, fostering a partnership that thrives on empathy and renewed communication rather than hurtful exchanges. As they break free from habitual reactions, they begin to waltz toward a brighter, more harmonious future together.

  • Introducing a pet into a relationship can be a game-changer, in more ways than one. While they bring a plethora of joy and connection to our lives, the responsibility that comes with pet ownership can also create additional stress and conflict. However, it's how couples navigate these challenges that can ultimately strengthen their bond. In fact, studies have shown that pet owners report feeling a stronger sense of closeness and intimacy with their partners. Whether it's bonding over walks with the dog or snuggling with a cat on the couch, pets can provide an additional source of positivity and love in any relationship.

  • Yes, couples therapy can be beneficial! Behavior consulting aims to improve everyone's well-being by enhancing understanding, adjusting environments, and meeting both human and animal needs. While Sami’s role as a behavior consultant focuses on educating clients about animal behavior and teaching skills, they cannot facilitate all the emotional conversations that arise from living with a pet who has behavioral challenges. These challenges can result in heightened stress, disruptions to your daily life, and feelings of isolation due to fear of judgment or difficulties in social interactions. Couples therapy can provide a space to process feelings of stress, isolation, or frustration, especially when differing expectations or emotional tolls from your pet’s issues impact your relationship. Together, therapy and behavior consulting can be a powerful combination for fostering a healthier dynamic in your home.
